Fight Your Dark Spots (But Not with Lemon Juice!)

Oh, no! It’s that time of the month when you pay for work stress and summer heat…and you wake up to find a pimple on your face. Maybe you touch it, maybe you don’t. Fast forward – the pimple is gone, but she left you with her friend, a dark spot. How do you deal with it?

Maybe you Google “Home remedies for acne scars,” and you find that tons of websites recommending to add some lemon or baking soda to your skincare routine. Well, As your go-to beauty myth buster, I have some REAL ANSWERS for you! Earlier this month, I interviewed NYC-based dermatologist, Dr. Nava Greenfield, about a solution for post-acne marks, this is what she said:

“Stay away from baking soda and lemon juice! They can cause other reactions that may worsen the marks, such as phytophotodermatitis, especially if exposed to sunlight.”

Think about it! Your skin is trying to heal from acne, so it’s sensitive. If you apply a strong agent like the acid found in fruits and baking soda, you’ll end up worsening your acne, creating deeper marks, eliminating some of the protective natural oils of your skin,

and possibly creating a chemical burn!

Got it, Fercci. So, what do we do instead? Well, Dr. Nava suggested:

“The most important things you can do to fade dark marks from recent acne is to stay away from the sun and avoid picking. The marks will fade with time.”

Time heals everything – from broken hearts to acne scars! : )

But, what if you’re like me and you’re impatient and dream of waking up with better skin tomorrow?

Great news! You CAN travel to the future and you don’t need a time machine.

“If you want to speed up the clearance time, a glycolic-based exfoliant works well, as do chemical peels”

What about if I only have Red Acne Marks!?

For red acne marks, Nava tell us that there are other ways such as: laser therapy, that can help eliminate the marks quickly. If you are interested on this, you should book an appointment with a dermatologist!

Now, you know the drill. Don’t put weird things on your skin without fact-checking what you’re doing. When I first started suffering from acne, I was very depressed. Every time I’d wake up to see a new pimple on my cheek, I’d become extremely frustrated – even embarrassed so I would try anything even things that hurt to have a better complexion!

Don’t let any condition affect who you are and how you live. So what if you have pimples and some marks? A skin condition shouldn’t make you less sparkly. You are beautiful and you are awesome – a few spots can’t take that away from you!
